Let’s celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) 2023 as professionals, caregivers, citizens, and people. The WDSD 2023 theme is “With Us Not for Us,” emphasizing the value of inclusiveness and equity.

Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition. The 21st day of the third month (March 21) was chosen as the WDSD date to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. Children with DS have distinct health and developmental characteristics and challenges because of the underlying genetic condition. Early interventions provide the best outcomes together with support to the family. Children with DS are often denied educational rights, equal opportunities, and getting their voices heard.

Dear parents, if you have a child with DS, please get support, start developmental interventions from birth, and ensure prompt health follow-up and inclusive education. Together we shall stand up with the persons with DS to advocate their rights and promote inclusion and well-being.
